The Bible (according to Hollywood)

There seems to be great interest today in the Bible. The Discovery and History channels often air something about the Bible. Movies depicting biblical stories like Noah’s flood and the exodus have been recently released in waves (no pun intended). We might think this is a good thing (it might be in some cases), but “interest” comes in various forms. Not everyone who is “interested” in the Bible is so because they want to hear God’s word and obey it.

What attracts the most attention today are the numerous “myths” and “fables” surrounding the Bible, rather than the text of the Bible itself. People are much more interested in the “Shroud of Turin” and the alleged illicit relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus than they are in listening to what God is saying to us. If you don’t believe me, visit a bookstore. Perhaps now is a good time take Paul’s warning seriously: “Have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women” (1 Timothy 4:7).
